It begins

It begins today!” I have to admit that I’ve been thinking about the concept of being more creative for a while. My idea was to stretch a little bit my imagination and force me to write more, but time escapes me in the “hundreds” of things that I commit to doing. It’s ironic isn’t it that my job is to manage other people’s time, and I’m complaining about managing my own.

I called this my “Duh Moment.” The moment where I thought.

“You need another challenge and be more creative.”

I bought the domain a while ago, not even thinking about how to use it. I knew that I wanted to do something related to this “feeling” if I can call it like that, but it ended up always being a “when I have time” project.

But something annoyed me. Every time I needed to do something to my domains, I would access my provider, and see in the list, this domain. It was staring at me and mocking me. Unused. And another year would come, and the domain provider would happily charge me for it.

During one of my runs, I was listening to the book “The 10x Rule,” and one comment stuck with me.

“Commit first and figure out later”.

I don’t know if it was the “runner’s high” pushing me forward or what, but I started to set up the blog the same day. I was excited but also a little bit scared because I don’t have a clear idea of what topics to approach here. But I’ll figure it out, but it begins now.

The idea

The main idea, as mentioned before, is to be more creative. I know myself, and I need the pressure to deliver actually to deliver. I’m Portuguese, and this is part of our DNA for sure. So I got an idea while wasting time on Reddit (see where the time goes?).

There is a fantastic area called Writing Prompts, where people submit the most amazing one-liner prompts, and I see people running with them and creating something amazing.

These stories can be about anything, and I’ll try not to limit myself, and that is the whole point. To push me to find interesting stuff to write about and have some fun while doing it. So I thought? Why not that?

Let’s make things interesting, shall we?

Writing for the sake of writing wasn’t enough. I needed to create a challenge. So here’s mine with all the SMARTness to it (I’m a project manager remember?)

I’ll write one story a week, every Sunday, using a random prompt from reddit our user submission. I have one hour to write 1000 words, edit and publish it. I’ll do this for 6 months.

I’m sure you know the phrase:

Genius is 1 Percent Inspiration and 99 Percent Perspiration

Many attribute it to Thomas Edison, but even if he didn’t say that, but it perfectly explains the concept.

I want to highlight the ones that got past the “good enough” and went for the “amazing.”

So this is my way to sweat and get another skill and it begins by committing to something.

Lowering Expectations

If you haven’t figure out by now, I’m not a writer. I’m not even a native English Speaker. I’m writing this in English because I want to reach a broader audience. If something feels off now, you know why.

All of this is a big experiment from my part so that things may change in the process. Don’t freak out if something does, but I want to keep things interesting.

Schedule

To start, I’ll post one story a week. I’ll post it on Sunday morning so that you have something (hopefully) to read during the weekend, but feel free to explore previous articles. It begins today but the first story will be published next week. Be sure to come back and comment on what you like (or don’t like) about it.

Interact

Interaction is vital, so please feel free to comment, drop me an email, and follow on Twitter. If you have a topic, please send it my way, and I’ll explore it further.
